A Man Named John Threw A Grenade and Everything Went Wrong

August 4, 2004 by Shey Dawg Leave a Comment

Sing to a Bluegrass Storyteller (Campfire Chaos) Style Tune

Fast-picking banjo, upright bass thumps, and fiddles chirping like they’re giggling. This turns the whole disaster into a backwoods legend: “Remember that idiot John and the rice-pile grenade?” The tune would be lively and foot-tappy, contrasting sharply with the explosive stupidity of the event.

In a base so tense, where fear was rife, Lived a soldier named John, causing much strife. Unlikeable and brash, with a reckless streak, His actions and words often left others weak.

One day near the KP, in a foolish jest, John found a grenade, putting everyone to the test. With arrogance and disregard for the danger, He tossed it around like a reckless stranger.

The grenade slipped from his careless grip, And into a pile of rice, it took its trip. The explosion was deafening, chaos ensued, John lay there wounded, his bravado subdued.

His comrades were furious, their anger clear, At John’s foolishness that brought danger near. A Purple Heart was given, but not with pride, For John’s unlikable traits, he couldn’t hide.

His tale spread like wildfire, a cautionary tale, Of a man so unlikeable, whose actions fail. John’s Purple Heart, a mark of shame and regret, For his incompetence and arrogance, a debt.
